Are Generics Safe?

November 30th, 2010

If you are taking a prescription for something, it is most likely generic. Currently, just about seventy percent of prescriptions are generic.  This translates into fifty-eight billion dollars in sales nationwide.  All health insurance carriers are doing whatever they can to cut costs and so they will switch their patients to generic as soon as they can. Generic drugs are less costly to create, to test and to purchase.

In many states it is OK for a pharmacist to dispense the cheapest drug they have in stock to their customers. They can do with without telling the doctor who prescribed the drug. Some state require pharmacies to do this and few complain about it.

Those who need drugs will eagerly make the switch to a generic medication so their co-pay will be lower, sometimes by half. There have been recalls that are making doctors wonder if the generics are as safe as the name brand. Even with the lower cost that is good news to many people, your health is at risk. Be sure to ask your doctor what the difference is and then make your choice.  Cutting the cost of medications is important but if it effects your health, how will you know?
